<p>Bags are always fun to make, and they are great to keep and to give. Following is a pattern for a self- closing bag.</p>
<p>Please let me know if the steps in the pattern are unclear, or if you have questions or suggestions. And I would love to see (and post to the blog, of course) any pictures of bags you make.</p>
<p>Best,<br />
Beth Walker</p>
<p><strong style="font-size: x-large;">Reversible Knot Bag</strong></p>
<div title="Page 1">
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><img class="alignleft wp-image-2595" title="image" src="http://fabricateboulder.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/image1.jpg" alt="" width="257" height="384" />Use this pattern to create a bag that has two handles, one smaller than the other. When you tuck the larger handle into the smaller, the bag closes up, and you have a single strap that you can slip over your wrist. And because it’s reversible, it’s like getting two bags in one.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;">Body of the finished bag is about 11”; the longer handle is about 6.5”.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Materials:</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong> *</strong> 1⁄2 yard of two complementary fabrics</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> <em>This example uses Tina Givens’ Star Flake &amp; Glitter Stardust/Scarlet and Anna Maria Horner’s Field Study Fine Feathered/Denim</em></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>* </strong>Optional: 1⁄2 yard of interfacing</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> <em> I prefer to skip interfacing, because I like the drape of the fabric as it dangles on your</em></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> <em>wrist</em></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><em></em><strong>*</strong> 13” of 3⁄4” twill tape or ribbon, that will reinforce the handle</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>*</strong>  Matching thread</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>*</strong>  Fabric marking tool and fabric adhesive</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Cutting the fabric</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;">1. Download, cut and assemble pattern pieces—a larger body pattern piece, and a base pattern piece</span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/116337575/Pattern-Piece-A" target="_blank">Pattern Piece A</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/116339893/Pattern-Piece-B" target="_blank">Pattern Piece B</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/116339444/Pattern-Piece-C" target="_blank">Pattern Piece C</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/116339443/Pattern-Piece-D" target="_blank">Pattern Piece D</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/116341085/Base-Pattern-Piece" target="_blank">Base Pattern Piece</a></p>
</div>
<p><span style="font-size: large;">5. Cut two pieces of ¾” twill tape or ribbon, one seven inches, and one five inches.</span></p>
</div>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: large;"><strong>Pinning the Pieces</strong></span></p>
<div>
<div><span style="font-size: large; color: #121212;">1. Set aside the three pieces of one of the fabrics. Continue with the remaining pieces.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div><span style="font-size: large; color: #121212;">&#8211; If using interfacing, attach to pieces of one of the two fabrics.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large; color: #121212;">2. If you didn’t transfer the marks, add them before continuing:</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div><span style="font-size: large; color: #121212;">&#8211; Fold the base piece in half lengthwise, and use a fabric marker to mark the fold on top and on bottom.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div><span style="font-size: large; color: #121212;">&#8211; Fold one of the larger pieces in half lengthwise (handles on top), then mark the bottom of the bag at the point of the fold. Repeat for the second piece.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large; color: #121212;">3. With right sides together, pin the center of the base piece to the center bottom of one of the larger pieces. Continue pinning the base to the larger piece. Repeat with the other side of the base, attaching the second large piece.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large; color: #121212;">4. On the first of the bags, mark a four or five inch opening along the base that won’t be stitched—left open for turning.  Pin both sides of the opening, removing any other pins along that opening.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large; color: #121212;">5. Pin two sides of the bag together, up to the point where the body of the bag straightens into the handle, called out with arrows on the pattern</span></div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large; color: #121212;">6. Repeat using pattern pieces in the second fabric, skipping step 4.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large; color: #121212;">7. Stitch, leaving an opening along the base of one of the bags.</span></div>
</div>
<div></div>

<div style="text-align: center;"><em>Two bags, stitched; opening is in the blue piece.</em></div>
<div>
<div title="Page 3">
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: large;"><strong>Turn and Stitch Together</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;">1. Turn the bag interior (the one with the opening along the bottom of the bag) so the right side faces out, then tuck into the bag exterior, so right sides are together. Fuss with it until the short handles are adjacent to one another and longer handles are adjacent to one another. Pin.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;">2. Stitch the sides of the handles, leaving a generous inch or more unstitched near the top of the handles. Stitch across the front and back of the bag. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: large;">3. Pull the fabric through the opening in the bottom seam. Then tug gently at the point where the two fabrics are joined, and four little openings become apparent. Tug the handles out through each of the openings. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: large;">4. Tuck the interior bag into the exterior of the bag. Flatten the handles and turn all unfinished edges under, then press. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: large;">5. Use a fabric adhesive or glue stick on the twill or ribbon, and then tuck each into place, the short piece into the short handle, the longer piece into the long handle. Then pin the handles together. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;">6. Pin and stitch all around the handles and the rim. At the handles, stitch across the folded fabric edges for reinforcement.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;">7. Stitch the interior opening closed and press.</span></p>
